Therapy Fees & Insurance Coverage in Massachusetts
Diverge Counseling offers online therapy in Massachusetts for OCD, autism, ADHD, and anxiety — and navigating the insurance side of therapy can be genuinely confusing. This page lays out exactly how fees and insurance work at Diverge so you can figure out what to expect before you ever reach out. If you have questions after reading, I'm happy to talk through them.
Insurance I Accept
currently accept Optum and Aetna insurance plans.
Optum is inclusive of the following plans: UnitedHealthcare, UnitedHealthcare Shared Services (UHSS), GEHA - UnitedHealthcare Shared Services (UHSS), UnitedHealthcare Global, UnitedHealthCare Exchange Plans (ONEX), Oscar, Oxford, UHC Student Resources, UMR, All Savers (UHC), Health Plans Inc, and Surest.
Aetna is inclusive of the following plans: Meritain, Nippon, Allied Benefit Systems, GEHA - United Healthcare Shared Services (UHSS), Trustmark, Trustmark Small Business Benefits, and Health Scope.
If you don't see your plan listed, that doesn't necessarily mean we can't work together — it may mean I'm considered an out-of-network provider for your plan. See below for how that works.
Out-of-Network Coverage
If your insurance plan isn't listed above, I may still be accessible to you as an out-of-network provider. Clients with PPO plans pay the session fee upfront and can submit a superbill — a detailed receipt I provide — to their insurance company for reimbursement. I also work with a service that can submit superbills on your behalf if you'd prefer. Reimbursement rates vary by plan, but some clients have received up to 80% back. The best way to find out what your plan covers is to call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.
Financial Accessibility
I understand that the cost of therapy is a real barrier for a lot of people, and that this is especially true in communities I care about serving — including neurodivergent and LGBTQ folks who are often navigating additional financial stressors. If the out-of-pocket fee is a concern, please reach out. I have a limited number of reduced-fee spots available, and I'm happy to have an honest conversation about what's workable.
Private Pay Cost: $170 per session
Frequently Asked Questions
-
A superbill is a receipt showing each time your card was charged for a therapy session in a given month. You can upload the superbill to your insurance company's online portal to show them how much you have paid. I also partner with an organization that can upload it for you. Once your insurance company reviews the superbill, they can reimburse you for a portion of what you paid. The amount reimbursed depends on your out-of-network benefits.

The best ways to find out if your insurance plan covers out-of-network therapy are to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card or to review your summary of benefits and coverage document. If you call them you can ask about your behavioral health out-of-network benefits. Many PPO plans have out-of-network benefits, whereas this is less common in HMO plans. Out-of-network benefits generally cover a percentage of what you have paid, up to a certain allowed amount.

This means that therapy with me is likely covered if you have behavioral health benefits through Optum or Aetna. Depending on your plan, you may have a copay or coinsurance and might be responsible for the full cost of the session until you meet a deductible. I recommend calling your insurance company to fully understand your coverage. Typically if therapy is covered it does not require a referral.
